Capturing a 6-Person Panel Discussion: Courier Newsroom Debate for NY-12

In the fast-paced world of New York City corporate event photography, every assignment can appear somewhat similar and very cookie cutter, but upon examination each event is unique; the people, the location, the details, and the message all vary. My job as a storytelling is to watch and wait for the most distinct moments; smiles, hand motions, and grins, This event—the unofficial final 5th debate for the New York 12th Congressional District race hosted by Courier Newsroom—brought together the six candidates on one stage, each with distinct viewpoints, energy, and character. I was there to capture the individuality of the candidates both on and off the stage.

When photographing a live event (panel discussion, dinner, gala, fundraiser) I try to be a fly on the wall as possible. This isn’t a photoshoot. It’s a live event. Through wide shots, close ups, details, posed group photos, and being constantly alert I created images that tell the Who, What, When, Where, and Why of the moment.

Event Coverage Strategy: Anticipation Over Reaction

For fast paced corporate and political event photography in NYC, preparation is everything. I made sure to arrive early to see the space, to discuss with my client their expectations, and learn of the limitations. On todays assignment, once the debate started I was not able to move. I was stuck in one spot. Prior the debate and after the debate, I made sure to capture each candidate interacting, the details, and the audiance. During the debate, I tracked hand motions, nervousness, slight facial expressions, and anything that brought excitement to the moment.

Composition in a Tight Event space

With six individuals on stage in a small East Village bookstore, composition became one of the most technical aspects of corporate event photography. To create variety amongst my images I:

• Wide shots established the full panel dynamic

• Mid-range compositions isolated key exchanges

• Tight crops highlighted emotional reactions and emphasis gestures

• Alternating angles ensured visual rhythm in post-production storytelling

The goal was to avoid visual clutter while preserving the intensity of simultaneous conversation.

When couples ask me about the best places for a Brooklyn Bridge proposal, they're usually looking for three things: iconic views, great photo opportunities, and a location that feels personal. The area surrounding DUMBO and Brooklyn Bridge Park offers all three.

Rain is one of the most common concerns clients have when planning a proposal in New York City. A Rainy Day Proposal on Bow Bridge

Rain in Central Park often changes the atmosphere of the park completely. Pathways become quieter, reflections appear across the pavement, and iconic locations like Bow Bridge feel more intimate than usual.

Justin proposed on Bow Bridge during a rainy May afternoon, surrounded by soft fog, greenery, and the calm lake below. The weather gave the proposal a quieter and more cinematic feel while still keeping the classic Central Park backdrop.
