Rain is one of the most common concerns couples have when planning a proposal in New York City. In many cases, some of the best NYC proposal locations are actually indoors.
As a New York City proposal photographer, I've photographed proposals in museums, historic landmarks, libraries, and transit hubs throughout the city. These locations provide cover from the weather while still offering beautiful backdrops and a memorable experience.
Here are some of my favorite places to plan a proposal in NYC when rain is in the forecast.
New York Public Library & Bryant Park
The New York Public Library is one of the most iconic buildings in Manhattan and works especially well for rainy-day proposals. The historic architecture, marble staircases, and classic New York atmosphere create a timeless setting.
One advantage of this location is its proximity to Bryant Park. If the rain slows or stops, couples can easily step outside for additional portraits around the park and surrounding Midtown streets.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The MET)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the most versatile indoor proposal locations in New York City. The museum offers grand architecture, quiet galleries, dramatic staircases, and countless portrait opportunities after the proposal.
Depending on the exhibit schedule and crowd levels, there are multiple locations throughout the museum that work well for a surprise proposal. Afterward, couples can explore the galleries while creating a gallery of engagement photos that feels uniquely New York.
Grand Central Terminal
Grand Central Terminal combines classic New York architecture with one of the city's most recognizable interiors. The Main Concourse provides an instantly recognizable backdrop while the surrounding balconies and corridors offer quieter locations for photos.
For couples looking for a proposal that feels distinctly New York City, Grand Central remains one of the strongest indoor options regardless of the weather outside.
American Museum of Natural History
The American Museum of Natural History offers one of the most unique proposal locations in NYC. From the iconic blue whale in the Ocean Life Hall to the museum's dramatic exhibits and architecture, there are countless opportunities for memorable photographs.
The museum is particularly popular for couples who want a proposal location that feels personal and different from traditional park or skyline locations.

Recently reopened after a major renovation, The Frick Collection offers one of the most elegant indoor proposal settings in New York City. Located on the Upper East Side, the museum combines historic architecture, intimate galleries, and beautifully restored interiors. For couples looking for a proposal that feels refined and private, the Frick provides a quieter alternative to some of the city's larger museums while still offering a distinctly New York experience.
Don't Forget About an Umbrella
Not every rainy-day proposal needs to move indoors.
Some of the most memorable proposal photographs are taken outdoors with a clear umbrella and a willingness to embrace the weather. Rain often means fewer crowds, softer light, and a more intimate atmosphere. Locations like Central Park, DUMBO, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and waterfront parks throughout NYC can look incredible during light rain.
If you're comfortable getting a little wet, a rainy proposal can often feel even more personal than a sunny one.
