Over the years, we’ve photographed proposals where dogs played a central role — sometimes wearing bandanas with messages like “Marry Me?” or “Mom and Dad Got Engaged,” and other times simply showing up as themselves. Your pup adds a layer of personality that makes your proposal even more unique.

A Grand Central Terminal Proposal on the Ramp

Grand Central Terminal has a rhythm all its own. Even when it’s busy, there are moments where the architecture takes over — the arches, the chandeliers, the scale of the space — and everything else fades slightly into the background. The ramps, in particular, offer a unique perspective, framing the terminal in a way that feels both cinematic and grounded.

Steven chose the Grand Central Ramp for his proposal, placing the moment right in the midst of the terminal's flow. With chandeliers overhead and the curve of the arch behind them, the setting felt unmistakably New York without needing to step into the center of the crowd.

Planning and Capturing the Moment

The ramp allowed the background to stay architectural and iconic, while still giving the moment room to breathe. Steven proposed with a custom-designed card styled like a train ticket, a nod to the terminal itself and the idea of a shared journey. The design referenced travel, New York, and the start of something lasting — a personal detail that fit the location perfectly.

After the proposal, we moved into the main terminal for staged portraits, taking advantage of Grand Central’s most recognizable features.

We photographed:

• In the Main Concourse, centered around the iconic clock

• In front of the departure boards, grounding the images in the function and history of the space

• On the stairs leading up to the Apple Store, where the elevated angle adds depth and scale

Each spot offered a slightly different feel while keeping the story cohesive — movement, architecture, and the unmistakable identity of Grand Central.

A November Proposal on Governors Island with Manhattan Views

Governors Island in November feels open and quiet in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere in New York. The summer crowds are gone, the leaves are nearly off the trees, and the grass stays green against a clear blue sky. From the higher points on the island, the Manhattan skyline stretches out cleanly — with One World Trade Center standing prominently in the background.

Matt chose one of the island’s hills for his proposal, drawn to the combination of space, skyline, and calm. The setting felt intentional without feeling staged, and the openness of the island allowed the moment to unfold naturally.

Planning and Capturing the Moment

The proposal took place during the day, when the light stays bright and even across the island. The elevated spot offered a direct view toward Lower Manhattan, giving the proposal a strong sense of place without distraction. November’s cooler air kept the island quiet, and the nearly bare trees simplified the scene visually.

• A hilltop location, creating separation and a clear skyline view

As Matt got down on one knee, the skyline framed the scene naturally. The presence of their dog added warmth without shifting focus — relaxed, honest, and very much part of their everyday life together.

After the proposal, we moved toward the waterfront for staged portraits. The open paths and unobstructed views across the harbor allowed the skyline to remain present while giving the images a slightly different feel — wider, calmer, and grounded by the water.

The Bronx Botanical Garden in late October is nothing short of magical. The trees around the lake burst into color — rich shades of yellow, orange, red, and green, blending to create one of the most vibrant backdrops in New York City. As a NYC proposal photographer, I’ve captured hundreds (a few thousand) proposals across every corner of the city—but few spots rival the magic of Governors Island at sunset, where there are no crowds and no unobstructed views. For Dhruv’s surprise proposal at Collective Retreats, we planned every detail carefully to make sure this early October moment unfolded flawlessly against one of the most scenic backdrops in New York City.

Planning the Perfect Governors Island Proposal

Governors Island is unlike any other proposal location in NYC—it’s peaceful, scenic, and feels like a world away from the city, even though it’s just an 8-minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan. Dhruv and I coordinated the timing down to the minute. They’d spend the day on the island at the retreat, and I would arrive to their private cabin just before they’d come back for dinner.
