Fall is one of my favorite times of year to photograph surprise proposals in New York City. With colorful foliage, crisp weather, and beautiful light, it's hard to beat autumn for a proposal. Whether you're looking for a quiet garden, a classic Central Park backdrop, a West Village stroll, or an incredible view of the Manhattan skyline, NYC has plenty of options.
If you're planning to pop the question this fall, here are six of my favorite places to propose in NYC. I also give you several tips and tricks :)
1. Model Boat Pond, Central Park
For a quintessential Upper East Side experience, head to the Model Boat Pond in Central Park. Grab a coffee and a pastry at the nearby café or Ralph’s on 72nd and Madison, then take a walk to one of the benches surrounding the pond. Throughout the day the parks department his model sail boats to rent, which are super fun to play with and to watch. In the fall, the Upper East Side and Midtown Manhattan peek through the colorful foliage, creating a beautiful backdrop for a surprise proposal.
It's a great choice if you want a relaxed Central Park proposal that feels like a natural part of your day together.
Best for: A classic Upper East Side atmosphere, fall foliage, and glimpses of the Manhattan skyline.
Time of the Day: Anytime
2. Ladies Pavilion, Central Park
The Ladies Pavilion is where Central Park's natural beauty meets the city. Sitting beside the lake, it offers an open view across the water, surrounded by trees that take on beautiful colors in the fall.
I love this spot for couples who want a scenic proposal that feels removed from the city while still being right in Manhattan. The lake and surrounding foliage also make a beautiful backdrop for portraits after the big moment.
Best for: A mix of nature and the city - You’re guaranteed to see fall colors against a classic Central Park view.
Time of the Day: Mornings and afternoons
3. Conservatory Garden, Central Park
One of my favorite rules for exploring Central Park is that the farther north you go, the quieter and more private the park becomes. Near 102nd Street and Fifth Avenue, the Conservatory Garden offers a beautiful change of pace, with manicured gardens, elegant pathways, and fall foliage surrounding you everywhere you look.
If you're planning to spend a day in Central Park, this is a wonderful spot to include in your plans. The formal gardens offer a different look from the park's more natural landscapes and winding pathways. Here everything is perfectly manicure and maintained making this a beautiful setting for a proposal and engagement portraits.
Best for: Couples who love gardens / flowers, a more upscale look, and a quieter-feeling side of Central Park.
Time of the Day: Anytime
4. Fort Tryon Park, Upper Manhattan
Make a day of it with a visit to The Met Cloisters (photography not allowed here) and a walk through Fort Tryon Park, one of Upper Manhattan's hidden gems. The Heather Garden blends beautifully manicured garden spaces with natural fall foliage, creating a scenic setting for an autumn proposal.
I love this location for couples who want to explore somewhere beyond the usual Central Park landmarks. You can enjoy the park together, plan your surprise proposal, and take portraits surrounded by the gardens and changing leaves. Whether we are in the garden, overlooking the Hudson River with a super cool view of the George Washington Bridge, or down at the Billings Arcarde Fort Tryon Park offers a spot most New Yorkers don’t even know about.
Best for: A garden proposal, colorful fall scenery, and a memorable day exploring Upper Manhattan.
Time of the Day: Anytime
5. Gantry Plaza State Park, Long Island City
Want the Empire State Building right behind you when you propose? Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City offers some incredible views of the Manhattan skyline, with the East River in the foreground.
Unlike the more tourist-heavy areas around DUMBO and Brooklyn Bridge Park, Gantry Plaza can offer a more relaxed waterfront atmosphere. It's a great alternative if you want iconic New York views without choosing one of the city's most obvious proposal spots, mixed in with taking photos inside the park after.
Best for: Manhattan skyline views, waterfront scenery, and a less expected New York proposal location.
Time of the Day: Anytime | Mornings are my favorite here!
6. Brooklyn Heights Promenade, Brooklyn
For a panoramic view of Manhattan and some incredible sunset scenery, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade is hard to beat. Looking across the East River toward the skyline, it's a beautiful spot for a proposal, especially when the fall evening light brings warm colors to the city.
Compared with the busier waterfront areas around DUMBO, the promenade can feel more relaxed, with locals enjoying the views. If you're dreaming of a sunset proposal with Manhattan as your backdrop, this is one location I'd put on your list.
Best for: Sunset proposals, panoramic Manhattan views, and a classic New York City backdrop.
Time of the Day: Sunset and evenings

what are my top tips to planning a nyc proposal
Think of a natural reason to go to X spot at Y time | Example: “I have reservations for drinks / lunch/ brunch / dinner at X time over at Y location. Let’s go a little early to see the view or walk around”
The earlier, the better - Propose first thing in the morning. You’ll avoid the crowds that will eventually arrive and then you can have the whole rest of the day to celebrate.
Pick something with meaning to you both
If you’re proposing in New York then your photos should clearly show you are in New York City.
