Kyle's Central Park Proposal Atop Cat's Rock

Proposals in Central Park are always full of surprises. What starts as a quiet morning walk can quickly become one of the most memorable days of a couple’s life. For Kyle and Molly, a stroll through the park turned into an unforgettable engagement on Cat’s Rock, one of Central Park’s most scenic overlooks.

The Proposal Story:
Kyle had originally planned to propose in a small, private cove near Gapstow Bridge, a romantic spot with views of the iconic Plaza Hotel. However, when the couple arrived, another pair—with their own photographer—had chosen the same location. Thinking quickly, we shifted plans and headed toward Cat’s Rock, just a short walk away.

From atop the stone outcrop, overlooking Wollman Rink and the Manhattan skyline, Kyle found the perfect alternative. As the city bustled in the distance, he dropped to one knee. Molly’s reaction was pure joy, and the moment felt even more special because of the spontaneity.

Why Cat’s Rock Works So Well:

• Views: Cat’s Rock offers sweeping vistas of Midtown, including the newly famous Billionaires’ Row.

• Convenience: Located near 59th Street, it’s easy to access without walking deep into the park.

• Privacy: While popular, it’s far less crowded than Bethesda Terrace or Bow Bridge, especially in the morning.

• Backdrop Variety: From wide skyline shots to close, candid portraits, this spot gives endless options for proposal photography.

What I love about Central Park proposals is the balance between New York City energy and natural tranquility. For Kyle and Molly, we captured both wide shots featuring the skyline and intimate portraits framed by bare winter trees. The early morning light softened the scene and gave their photos a timeless, romantic quality.

Parker's Christmas Proposal in Bryant Park NYC

Parker and I talked about finding the perfect spot for his proposal. We talked about the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, but I knew it would be way too chaotic and busy just two weeks before Christmas. If it’s hard just to walk at the Rockefeller Christmas tree, it’s going to be impossible to get down on one knee. Bryant Park features its own Christmas tree and countless holiday shops with festive decorations. The spot we chose in Bryant Park tends to be less crowded than other parts, and would feature the Empire State Building in the background of their proposal.

The Proposal Plan - On their trip to NYC, Hannah and Parker would checkout the Bryant Park Christmas popup shops. After touring the shops and watching the ice skaters Parker would propose.

Bryant Park is very busy during the holiday season with both the ice skating rink attracting tourists and the numerous holiday shops. However, there are still some great vantage points for your proposal moment and for photographing beautiful posed photos. Joe's Grand Central Terminal Proposal

At the center of the hustle and bustle of New York City sits Grand Central Terminal. During the week hundreds of thousands of commuters pass through its halls, and on the weekends tourists from around the world flock to admire its grand architecture. There’s nothing quite like it. It is quintessential NYC. It’s an icon. All of these unique characteristics make it a perfect place for a marriage proposal, and a perfect place for photos.

The Proposal Plan: Joe and Anabeth toured the Rockefeller Christmas tree and then headed up to Grand Central Terminal while visiting New York City. On the steps going down to the concourse Joe would propose.

Hiring a Professional Photographer to photograph your surprise Grand Central Terminal proposal is easy

Grand Central Terminal offers a few different locations for you to propose. However, my favorite spot is on the West side of the station off of Vanderbilt Avenue, opposite of the Apple Store. Here you have an unobstructed view of the terminal from a high vantage point, and less traffic entrance allowing you room to drop down to one knee.

Brian's West Village Proposal

Proposing not in Central Park, amazing!

When Brian reached out to me to photograph his proposal in the West Village I was kind of surprised. I’ve photographed hundreds of proposals through the city, but never a proposal in the West Village. Engagement sessions in the West Village, yes. Not proposals. Brian assured me he had found the perfect spot to propose, and it would look great in photos too.

He sent me photos of the spot, a map screenshot with “x” marks the spot, and video of him walking from the restaurant, where they’d have brunch prior, to the spot where he’d propose. He 110% found thee spot.

The Proposal Plan: Brian and Courtney would get brunch at The Little Owl in the West Village. Then they would walk one block away towards the Grove Street Garden. There Brian would propose.

Classic West Village Engagement Photos

I’ve photographed a ton of engagement sessions through the West Village over the years, but never a proposal. Most of my proposal requests are for Central Park, The Edge, private rooftops, the Brooklyn waterfront, or a park. Brian’s proposal in the West Village was a first, and it is certainly not the last. It is now one of my favorite places to photograph a proposal in New York City.

Central Park has its great spots, but the West Village just offers a totally different look for both your proposal and your post-proposal mini-session photos.

Drew's New York City Rooftop Proposal

Rain or Shine, the proposal will go on.

Drew planned the perfect proposal high above midtown Manhattan with a direct and unobstructed view of the Empire State Building. However, mother nature had other plans, as morning showers passed through leaving New York City with fog, which partially blocked the Empire State Building. As Drew proposed, the clouds cleared and slowly the skyline revealed itself.

The Proposal Plan: Drew surprised Sophia at the Midtown Loft and Terrace, where she was supposed to be “meeting friends for brunch”.

Proposing in New York City is about you, your story, and the now. In my proposal photos I always capture the location, as it’s a part of your proposal story. What makes a rooftop proposal so unique is its ability to capture the NYC skyline with its iconic buildings and unobstructed views. Neil's Rockefeller Christmas Tree Surprise Proposal

I tell client’s “It’s straight out of a movie, but it’s real life” when helping plan their Rockefeller Christmas tree proposal. While proposing at the Christmas tree around Christmas is chaotic, jam packed with tourists, and somewhat risky from a photography standpoint (people walking in front of you), it sure does make awesome and memorable photos. If you’re willing to have people in your photos in order to capture this unique New York City spot, then let’s go for it!

Christmas in New york, and an engagement!

On today’s session, Neil proposed to Ashley on their long weekend trip to New York City. This was Neil’s first time to NYC, and he found both the crowds and the world famous Rockefeller Christmas Tree to be very impressive.

We started our holiday proposal session at Rockefeller Center and then moved to the shops at Bryant Park for a post-proposal posed mini-session.

It worked out very well photographing Neil and Ashley’s proposal near the Rockefeller Christmas tree just a few blocks North of Bryant Park. After the proposal and several posed photos we moved downtown to Bryant Park. When photographing I took full advantage of all the twinkly lights and making sure to capture the Empire State Building in a few of their photos. Great photos have context.
