Justin's Private SoHo Rooftop Proposal

As a professional NYC Proposal Photographer, I am often asked to photograph secret marriage proposals in some of New York City's most iconic spots; Central Park, Grand Central, The Edge at Hudson Yards. However, every here or there I am asked to photograph a truly unique proposal, a rooftop proposal. On tonight's proposal, Justin proposed on the penthouse deck of the Soho Grand Hotel.

Cory's Brooklyn Bridge Park Proposal

Photographing night time proposals in New York City, AKA “The City of Lights”

Cory and Bethan were visiting New York City from Whales for the very first time. Cory planned their trip to the tee with all of the top sites, attractions, and to-dos. As special as this trip was going to be, Cory knew this trip was going to be extra special as he would propose.

His Proposal Plan: The couple was staying in midtown Manhattan and had dinner reservations at The River Cafe at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. They’d UBER to Brooklyn and arrive early to checkout the iconic New York City skyline from Brooklyn. Upon checking out the view Cory would drop down to one knee and propose.

Photographing a nighttime proposal

To quote Kanye West, “All of the lights (all of the lights). (Lights, lights) all of the lights”, and for our nighttime proposals that’s what we are after, light; the city skyline and our flash to light the night. It’s certainly tricky photographing and lighting our night time proposals, and for that very reason we restrict where we photograph proposals after dark. The area around Brooklyn Bridge Park / DUMBO is one of the few areas we will photograph at night.

One of the big downsides of night time proposals is that our post proposal mini-sessions are shorter.

Steve and Karen Sunset Proposal at The Edge NYC

Proposing at The Edge is one of the best places to propose in all of New York City

That’s a bold statement. However, if you are proposing in New York City, and no matter if you are from New York or you are just visiting, NYC is a part of your story. And, it should make an appearance in your proposal photos. When hiring a professional proposal photographer to capture your moment, you want there to be context as to where and when you proposed. The Edge provides you unobstructed views of New York City facing South, East, West, and North.

How to plan a surprise proposal at The Edge in Hudson Yards NYC

First, you’ll have to buy tickets to visit The Edge at Hudson Yards, and so will your photographer. Many people ask when is the best time to propose at The Edge, and the best answer is mornings or afternoons, just not mid-day. The lighting is so good at The Edge, as the light reflects off of the building on to the viewing deck and the views face every which way.

To propose at The Edge and have your moment photographed by a professional proposal photographer book your tickets, and have your NYC proposal photographer book his/her tickets for a time slop before you.minutes before you. Please keep in mind, during the holiday season the line to get through security can take as long as 1 hour. Once up top, my favorite spot to capture proposals is facing East with the Empire State Building in the background.

Abraham's Proposal atop The Hudson Yards’ The Edge

Photographing Abraham’s proposal atop The Edge at Hudson Yards during sunset was a moment I won’t forget. Although we missed photographing the pure warm golden hour light, the moments after sunset proved to be just amazing as well. It was the type of light we photographers chase and hope for.

The Proposal Plan: Abraham and Valerie arrived, and Abraham asked me, “a stranger”, if I could take a photo of the two of them with his iPhone. I took a several photos and gave them a few instructions. Then, Abraham turned to Valerie, and started to tell her about all of the reasons he loved her. Perfectly, just as the sun was hitting the horizon Abraham dropped to one knee and popped question. Valerie was so shocked, full of emotion, and simply ecstatic. Her reaction was so genuine.
